Never Forget Your Quit!

When you become a power quitter some amazing things happen. You feel like shit for a few days then you start feeling better, a lot better. The next thing that happens is you feel a great sense of accomplishment that you want to share everyone. When you share with others you could either come across as a preacher or a loather, depending on your personality.

When you first quit smoking you will feel really bad for a couple of days. I’m not going to sugar coat it, it is bad for most people. In reality, though, it is no worse then a bad cold, with symptoms peaking at day 3 and mostly gone by day 7. I once went on a 7 day diet! Who can’t do something they don’t like for 7 days? Such as getting stuck with the in-laws visiting or a rained out vacation. In reality 7 days is not that long (it’s only 168 hours). I don’t want to dig to deep into the first few days as I’d like to talk about the revelation.

The Revelation! After about 5-10 days you will experience a very happy moment; the moment you realize you made it through the physical withdraw symptoms. This is cause for a celebration and big pat on the back! You made it through the toughest part so breathe some fresh air and take a moment to reflect. This should be remembered as a moment of accomplishment and fear, accomplishment that you did it, fear that you will NEVER put yourself through it again.

So you have powered through your quit, you have proved to yourself that you can live without nicotine. You are now an ex smoker, but now what to do when you encounter current smokers. As a smoker you know you hated being preached to about not smoking. But as an ex-smoker you know what a great accomplishment quitting is and that everyone should be able to do it. I would say the best way to go about this is to praise the fact that you quit smoking, giving the details “I quit 41 days ago and I smoked for over 20 years” but not go into any of the smoking kills preaching. Being an ex-smoker is enough to help them start their quit journey.

The best way to not be a preacher or a loather and to stay an ex is to never forget your quit!

The Benefits of Cold Turkey and PowerQuit.

It’s day 39 for me and I feel good, get 2-4 craving’s a day, which are easily powered through. This morning I checked out one of my email updates and I came across this story on a well know quit smoking site:

“week 8, how many days is that? well it doesnt matter. im doing ok… went thru the patches, stoped them this past monday, now im using the lozenges. yeah i know you arent supposed to use all that together… but hey “willing to go to any length” right? im doing good tho… im still having cravings… but since i dont have access of any kind to cigs or any way to go get any most of the time…we are a 1 car family and he takes it to work…. well i deal with the cravings the best i can and do ok. Every one keep keepin on… they say it will get easier, and it does, even if it only a little bit at a time.” Teresa

Two months after quitting and Teresa is still fighting it every step of the way. This is the problem with nicotine replacement therapy. While you might not be smoking you are still a nicotine addict. Poor Teresa quit 8 weeks ago and is still dealing with physical withdrawal symptoms.

The sad thing is she will most likely start smoking again. And not because she didn’t try but because she was fooled into spending hundreds of dollars on drugs by the drug companies. She gave up her cigarettes but is still addicted to nicotine.

I wish Teresa the best of luck in discovering the real cause of her addiction (nicotine) and her ability to deal with it.

How Long Does Nicotine Withdrawal Last?

To understand how long nicotine withdrawal will last, we need to look at the physical effects of nicotine withdrawal and how to cope with these effects. It would also be important to examine the mental effects nicotine withdrawal. Since nicotine withdrawal can be very intense, we will examine the tips to deal with nicotine withdrawal.

While everyone is different, some of the physical effects of nicotine withdrawal include: Anger, Irritability, Impatience, Anxiety, Inability to Concentrate, Fatigue, Insomnia, Sore Throat, Coughing, Mucus, Headaches, Nausea, Constipation and Gas to name a few. Basically, you will feel like Shit for about 3-5 days with a peak on day 2 or 3. Be prepared for it and it won’t be a surprise. Think positively though, you might not have any withdrawal symptoms at all. With proper mental preparation you can easily overcome any of these nicotine withdrawal symptoms. We have all had to deal with one of more of these problems sometime.

Prepare for some head games, the mental aspect of nicotine addiction is amazing. Since you started using nicotine it has been hijacking your brain into thinking it’s something you need to survive. You might think you can’t live without it. Or your life will be worse without nicotine. The mental addiction can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months or more; really it never goes away. When I quit I just thought of all the times in my past when I felt I just HAD to have nicotine. I realized that with or without nicotine you will have craving’s for it, it is just a matter of whether you will give in or not. Everyone has a personal story where they wanted to smoke and couldn’t or they stopped everything to have a smoke when they should not have. These are all instances when you gave into your nicotine addiction. Use them to get through your nicotine withdrawal.

Since nicotine withdrawal can be intense here are a few tips to get you through the tough times. For the first couple days have a healthy snack 30-45 minutes before your meal. Choose a snack that that has natural sugars like a fruit, or a few grams of carbohydrates like a pretzel or a bread stick. This will help you not overeat and help balance your blood sugar. Take up something new like art, exercise or sewing these all keep your hands busy and make your quitting nicotine that much more valuable.

Nicotine is a very addicting drug and while it is difficult break your nicotine addiction, it is not impossible. You can do it! All you need is a little knowledge, a small push, some determination and support. There are many websites to help you quit your nicotine addiction, the important thing is that you break your addiction to nicotine. The power quit way says to earn while you learn, start your quit right now! You can only read so much about riding a bike, before you actually have to get on the bike and try to ride it. Why Is It Harder For Women To Quit Smoking?

Men and women’s brains are different, giving us different ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. This affects our success at quitting smoking.
Men’s brains are highly compartmentalized (picture an ice cube tray) so one side of their brain has a hard time communicating with the other (i.e. they can’t multitask…duh, huh?). They also have an innate sense to conquer. So, when they decide to quit smoking they are able to focus on one thing and “have” to conquer it.
Women’s brains on the other hand are empathetic. We have a low ability to control emotions. This means when we try to quit smoking, we are more tied to the emotional side of why we smoke(d) and will give in to those emotions. We also do not have that sense of conquest like men. So when we fail we express our emotions by crying over why we failed (which was our emotions) and round and round we go.
Now ladies, go find a man! Team up with a male friend, husband (your own), partner, or co-worker and ask them to be your quit smoking buddy. We will use their sense of conquest and focus to help us to stop smoking. They won’t even see we are using them because they can only concentrate on one thing at a time right? That one thing is us and how they can be our hero by helping us quit smoking.

Smoking Triggers Everywhere , not this time.

Here is a little story I’d like to share about a trigger gone wrong. While I was at the store the other day, the guy in front of me was buying a pack of cigarettes. The “addict” in my mind makes it sound good and tries to trigger me to buy some. I notice the guy almost didn’t have enough money for the pack of cigarettes, as he was digging through his pockets to come up with enough money. He finally pulls out a bunch of change from his pocket, hands it to the cashier and says, “You took all my money and all I have left is 2 pennies”. I had a little chuckle to myself because I fought the trigger by remembering how I used to dig looking for change to buy a pack and glad I don’t have to do it anymore.

Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Cold turkey has gotten a bad rap as a way to quit. Why? Because the companies telling you how hard it is to quit cold turkey are the ones who make the quit smoking aid products. You see, they want to see you fail because then you will try another of their products and they will make more money. Even if you are successful at quitting smoking by using one of their products, you most likely are now hooked on their product instead of tobacco. So they are still making money on your failure.

Think of it this way: when you quit smoking cold turkey you are essentially running through a sticker bush. You can use a stop smoking product and it will slow your trip trough the sticker bush, but you’re still going to get poked and pricked. So, you can get it over with quick by just running straight through the bush cold turkey or you can walk slowly and enjoy the prickles.

I have a lot of analogies but instead of sugar coating it I’ll just spit it out: Cold turkey is the fastest way to get nicotine out of your system so you can get on with the rest of your life.

Overcome your fear, you have the power to quit!

Good Side of Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms

Right now I will be talking about a common nicotine withdrawal symptom: IRRITABILITY. When you first quit smoking it’s not going to be peaches and cream. So be prepared for it and embrace it. How often in your life will you have a valid reason to be an ass. While not everyone is the same, I personally try to channel my feeling’s towards the Nicotine industry. The more I research about the smoking and quit smoking industry, the more reason I found to be angry at them.

As far as addiction goes, this is one of the best tricks to ease the mind in the early days. In your war against smoking it’s best to take it one day at a time. If your just starting your quit, take it by the hour. Tell your mind “I will not smoke for on hour” then move it to the next hour. Soon a smoke free day will have past. Start this again the next day and after a few days you should be able to move it to one day at a time.

As the first of many posts on PowerQuit.com, I’d like to say it’s great to be smoke free! I’m starting this site as an aid for myself and many others who want to quit smoking. I found a need for a site that was not sponsored by a major “player”. You know, the ones who have profits to gain from your continued failure. “Oh that didn’t work, try this it’s only $49.99 a week”. While I wouldn’t mind making a few dollars from this site (I spent thousands on cigarettes, it would be nice to make some of it back), the main goal it to stay smoke-free and help others do the same, without the corporation’s goal of keeping you trying.
